ccfall2015coverDisclosure: The wonderful people at Cabot Cheese and Chop Chop Magazine have provided us with a great giveaway  for one of our readers to win a box of cheese and a subscription to Chop Chop magazine. We were not compensated for this post though we do occasionally receive free samples of cheese from Cabot as a member of their Cheese Board. We did receive one free issue of Chop Chop to review. Keep reading to find out more…

Obviously, we love to cook. It is therapeutic, especially when it comes to baking. But, we leave these therapeutic cooking experiences to when we are cooking alone because we know that when we cook with our kids, things tend to slow down and get messier! But, we go in knowing this and make sure that we save these special times for days when we have a little extra free time to slow down and enjoy these teachable moments because of the many benefits cooking can bring to kids:

  • teaching life long cooking skills
  • spending quality time together
  • opening up their minds and palates to trying new foods
  • improving communication in a relaxed atmosphere
  • building  comprehension and math skills

So how do you start spending more time in the kitchen with your children?

This is where ChopChopKids, a non-profit organization devoted to getting children into the kitchen cooking real food with their families comes into the picture. We are definitely on board with their mission as we are big believers in getting families’ eating at home more often and together.

Their Chop Chop Magazine   is a great cooking magazine for families as it targets children of all ages. With over 2 million subscribers to the quarterly publication, they have won many awards and recognition by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the James Beard Foundation and the Parent’s Choice Award.  Plus, who doesn’t love getting magazines in the mail?

Lesley’s oldest child devoured our copy and she eagerly picked out a recipe she wanted to make all by herself (somehow we missed getting a picture of that!). After reading the magazine, she even bought her first cookbook at her school book fair. And, Lesley will attest that out of all of her children, her oldest never wanted to help cook before. Lesley is so excited about  her new interest!

ChopChopKids has  another website, the Chop Chop Cooking Club, which is free for everyone. It is a national healthy cooking challenge where they are challenging families to cook together once a month for 6 months. That should be totally doable! And they provide a basic recipe that everyone should learn how to make each month. Any beginner cooks can join as well as children between the ages of 5 and 12, so check it out for some extra cooking encouragement.

We (Lesley and Ann) first met years ago while training for Ironman Wisconsin. Our paths crossed again at Georgia State University while studying to become registered dietitian nutritionists. Over the years, our paths kept crossing and we soon discovered that we shared a love for menu planning. This blossomed into My Menu Pal where we help the food industry up their nutrition game to become their customer's nutrition hero.
